io, zlatan (3-14-12)

So today out of pure impulse I bought "I Am Zlatan," a memoir of the swedish soccer star Zlatan Ibrahimovic that was available on iTunes. I'm not too savvy with all the new technology but ironically I'm taking advantage of all the perks the iPhone offers. I bought the memoir via itunes on my phone and instead of carrying a book I have it in my pocket. What's funny is that within 6 hours I'm almost done reading it all when I know damn well I should be reading LMNOP for my English class. haha

SELFISHNESS (3-13-12)

I was reading some of Thomas Hobbes' work and I noticed how pessimistic he was towards humanity. What I was reading specifically about was the necessity of government and why it is legitimate. Hobbes has the reader imagine a world without any form of government, or as he likes to call it, us in the "state of nature." According to him, humas are selfish by nature, so in the state of nature we'd also be in a state of war. We would be in a world where everyone's selfishness would take over in order to survive and we would be in war with ourselves. This is how Hobbes justifies the existence of government.

dreadful week (3-12-12)

This past week has been terrible for me in so many ways. I'm not one to complain and I'm not pitty's biggest fan, but sometimes things are so evident that we're left with no choice but to acknowledge them. Last Saturday my patient had wax build up in his ears so his hearing was almost all gone hence I had to scream the whole day so he can hear me.  By last Sunday I had a fever and my throat was killing me. Monday I felt so bad physically that I wasn't able to make it to Italian class, but by the evening my fever had gone away so I went to English class. As the week went by I was getting better and better but when it's not one thing it's another.

On Thursday I get documents in the mail, and it's a lawsuit against me. I'm getting sued for 20,000 dollars because I got in a car accident and I wasn't under my mom's insurance. They're basically charging me for medical bills, car loss, everything an insurance company would cover and I'm so distressed.

On Saturday my voice was going away and sure enough I lost my voice as the day progressed. The whole weekend I had to work with my voice coming back and then losing it again, and my patient's hearing was just as bad as it was last week. Not to mention he also got pink eye so I had to be real cautious and wash my hands thoroughly in order to avoid getting it.

Today, I got picked up from work by my mother and we went to see an attorney for advice. When we were sitting in the waiting room my mom was caressing my arm and she pulled up my shirt sleeve only to see a tattoo on her eldest son's arm. There we were, confinded in a small waiting room with the whole accident problem conquering our minds, and suddenly one more incident was piled on top of all that. What's crazy is that it all happened so fast yet her prolonged shocked face haunted me. I saw disgust, disappointment, distress, and death in her eyes, as if I got disowned right there and then. I gave her a brief explanation (upon request) only because she's worthy of one, but I knew that it wasn't the adequate place or time to be talking about my tattoo, much less dwelling on it. We had another problem; a bigger problem to face, so this tattoo issue will have to be put aside, theoretically of course.

Reminiscing (2-29-12)

Today I work with one of my patients for only 4 hours. Interestingly enough, on this day exactly a year ago he got an important phone call from the doctor. I remember the smile on my patient's face when he hung up, the doctor had told him he was no longer considered terminally ill. You see, my patient had contracted a bacteria called MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus) while he was in the hospital 3 months prior to this phone call. This bacteria is very good at avoiding antibiotics because it likes to live in artificial parts of the body where not much blood circulates. In my patient's case, the bacteria was living close to the hip replacement he had gotten, which is really close to his spine, thus qualifying him as a hospice patient (terminally ill).  For 4 months the infectious desease doctors were looking for an antibiotic that would kill the bug without messing up his kidneys. They tried 3 different antibiotics but the MRSA lived up to its name and was totally resistant to them. Finally they found an effective antibiotic that  was assisting his t cells to fight off the bacteria. Before finding this drug my patient was under the impression that he was going to die in about 6 months, but after the doctor's phone call of hope here we are, a year later and my patient is stronger than ever. No more MRSA :)

youtube whore (2-28-12)

I'm always on youtube, sometimes I watch educational things like documentaries, cooking videos, interviews, but most of the time I'm watching videos like the ones above. I guess I'm a sadistic asshole who gets intrigued by these kind of videos, and let me tell you they are not hard to find. I don't feel like I've ever made an effort to look for them, if anything, they look for me hahaha as if some divine higher power lined them up for me to watch. Either way I get a kick out of it and apparently 6 million other viewers on the ipad video did too hhaha.

SLS (2-27-12)

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is perhaps the most dangerous ingredient used in skin and hair care products. After reading some reports and some articles, I learned that it is generally used for clinical testing as a skin irritant. Many labs use it to purposely irritate an animal's skin so they can later test their healing agents. I'm flabbergasted by all this information because as dangerous as SLS is, it is prevalent in the market. It's everywhere! Shampoos, lotions etc.. It is believed to cause cataracts, skin irritation, infection, and I use all these products! Instantly I asked myself, "How can corporations justify the distribution of their products that contain a dangerous ingredient like SLS?"
